The dark stains on your shingles are gloeocapsa magma, a hardy algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Pressure washing a roof strips granules and voids warranties; soft washing kills the growth without touching the shingle.
Algae holds moisture against the roof and reflects less sunlight, which raises attic temperatures and shortens shingle life. A regular roof wash is a fraction of the cost of an early replacement.
